INTRODUCTION

1. In his first epistle, John writes of victory in overcoming the world...

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world; our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 Jn 5:4-5)

In addition to a loving, faithful and obedient attitude toward God, there are five major principles that are essential to a correct understanding of Scripture. These vital keys must always be kept in mind when studying the Word of God. These important principles are:

1. "All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (II Timothy 3:16-17, KJV throughout).

Philippians 2:12-13
(12) Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. (13) For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

It is God who saves! God saved Israel from Egyptian slavery. Israel did not overcome Pharaoh and Egypt by either warfare or by dint of superior intelligence. Jesus Christ is our Savior, and we cannot save ourselves from sin's power. When we accept Him as Savior, it obligates us as His servants to obey Him.

Scripture: Psalm 126:6 "He that goes forth and weeps, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bearing his sheaves with him."

This scripture speaks of the efforts of the exiles who were trying to reestablish their nation amid difficulties. Yet, it is a principle that is applicable to our work as Christians as well. Sowing seed of any kind, whether natural or spiritual, is hard work that requires personal sacrifice and faith, yet in the end, it brings forth a harvest.
